Chinese Antique Sancai Glaze Roof Tiles ,Sculptural Figure Late 19th Century. Sancia glazed. Condition: in antique condition with a couple small chips (as seen in photos) Fair condition with some glaze chips. Nicks , discolourations. Wear consistent with age and use Measurements are in the pictures. scaled body, modelled seated on its hindquarters with tail raised, its raised head framed by its curled mane, covered overall in a deep glaze. Chinese glazed sancai glaze temple guardian lion / foo dog sculptural roof tiles. Large in size, exceptional in quality, having ornate fine detail throughout, these hand-crafted Chinese folk art antiques, present with wonderful original glaze finish, stately, highly designed , beast depicted in powerful forward facing stance, front paws perched (representing power over the world). Makes for a bold, dramatic statement piece. Presumably these end tiles originally adorned the roof of an ancient Chinese Buddhist Temple, protecting it from evil people, spirits and influences. The one-of-a kind, rare, near matching architectural ornaments present splendidly, with rich, brilliant deep glaze, outstanding original, heavy elegantly aged patina. They can be polished if desired but we prefer display their incredible history, and rustic old world character and charm. Highly decorative, the figure can be displayed almost anywhere.
