For sale is a vintage Elgin-branded kerosene hurricane lantern manufactured by R.E. Dietz Company, Syracuse, NY. DATE: Circa late 1938 to 1942 based on patent numbers stamped on air tube: 1,985,517, 2,054,878, and D-111,578. No date code present.MODEL: Streamline / tubular cold-blast hurricane lantern. This style was made by Dietz for private labels like Elgin. Sold through hardware stores and catalogs.CONDITION: As-found, barn/workshop condition. Sold as-is, untested, for collectible/display/restoration purposes. What I see:
- Original red paint with natural age, rust, and patina throughout. Exactly as found.
- Original Dietz glass globe with embossed winged-wheel logo. Please check photos.
- Bail handle intact and moves freely.
- Wire globe guard intact.
- Burner assembly present. Wick lift lever turns.
- "ELGIN" embossed on base/font.
- Tank/fuel fount not tested for leaks.
- Wick condition unknown. This lantern has NOT been cleaned, tested with fuel, or lit by me. I do not guarantee it is functional. Selling as a collectible decor piece.SIZE: Approx 12 inches tall to top of bail handle, 6 inches wide at base.HISTORY: Elgin did not make lanterns. They contracted major makers like Dietz to produce them with the Elgin name. The design patents and Dietz globe confirm this is a quality Dietz-built lantern.SHIPPING: Will be carefully packed.
