Vintage 1940s Girl Scout Pin Collection w/ 1942 Named Membership WWII era scout: $75.00
A wonderful grouping of vintage Girl Scout insignia accompanied by an original, named Girl Scouts, Inc. membership certificate dating to the World War II era.The collection was acquired together and appears to represent the progression of a single Girl Scout through multiple levels of Scouting. The original membership certificate identifies Edith Ann Stevens of Troop No. 1, Lansing, Michigan, and records her as an Intermediate Girl Scout, with membership expiring in August 1942. The certificate itself bears the printed form code A-12-M.S. 11-40, consistent with a form produced in 1940.The grouping contains four pieces of period Girl Scout insignia:Senior Girl Scout Membership Pin: A particularly attractive small gold-colored pin featuring the traditional Girl Scout eagle and shield surrounded by a radiating sunburst. This distinctive Senior membership design was introduced in 1938 and remained in use into the 1960s. The reverse bears an “R” maker\'s mark and uses a traditional pin-and-catch attachment. Given the dated material accompanying the collection, this example may date from the early 1940s, although the pin design itself was used for a longer period.Traditional Girl Scout Membership Pin: A larger trefoil-shaped membership pin featuring the letters GS, American eagle, shield, arrows and olive branch. This is the traditional American Girl Scout membership emblem. The reverse has an older-style long pin attachment. Age-related oxidation and verdigris are present, particularly in the recessed areas, and have intentionally been left untouched.Brownie Girl Scout Membership Pin: An early openwork trefoil-style Brownie pin featuring the traditional Brownie elf figure. The reverse retains its period pin hardware. This piece shows considerable age and finish wear, exposing the copper-colored base metal beneath. Its presence alongside the Intermediate certificate is consistent with an earlier stage in the Scout\'s membership.Girl Scout Membership Star: Five-pointed gold-colored membership star with its original threaded post and screwback fastener. Membership stars represented years of Girl Scout membership. The screwback construction is characteristic of earlier examples and is consistent with the general period represented by this grouping. The insignia appear to be gold-finished/plated base metals rather than solid gold. No solid-gold purity marks have been observed. The pieces show varying degrees of oxidation, finish loss, scratches and normal age-related wear. Please examine photographs carefully for condition. What makes this collection especially appealing is the accompanying named 1942 membership certificate. Rather than being four unrelated loose pieces of Girl Scout memorabilia, the items were found together and appear consistent with a Girl Scout\'s progression from Brownie through Intermediate and potentially Senior membership. The dated certificate provides an unusually nice historical context for the group. While the pins were acquired with the certificate and their chronology is consistent with such a progression, no claim is made that each individual pin can be independently documented as having belonged to Edith Ann Stevens. All four pins and the original membership certificate are being sold together as one historical grouping. They have not been polished or restored. An appealing piece of early American Girl Scout history with strong Lansing, Michigan provenance and an especially interesting WWII-era association. Suitable for a Girl Scout memorabilia collection, Scouting history collection, Michigan historical collection, or display.
