Japan was building the decade that would define it, and a woman starting out wanted a watch that would keep up - accurate, legible, and smart enough for an office.Seiko\'s answer was Joyful, and this is a good example of why the line lasted. The case is stainless steel, round at the bezel but cut into flat facets where it meets the bracelet, so it catches light in planes rather than curves. It is a small watch by modern standards and was a confident one by the standards of its own time.The dial does the talking. A brushed silver ground, black Roman numerals set right out to the edge, a printed minute track, and - the practical heart of it - a day and date window at three, the day spelled out in English on a blue ground. Quartz was still young enough in 1981 that a display like this was the reason you paid for it.The bracelet is Seiko\'s own, a close-linked steel band that tapers to a signed fold-over clasp, and it has survived four decades with almost nothing to show for them.Forty-four years on, it still opens the week with the day written plainly at three o\'clock.
