Vintage/Antique Javanese Kris orKeris Dagger/Short Sword.
Much has been written about the kris or keris so Iwon’t go into any great detail here as it all can be accessed easily on theinternet.
Generally, the usual spelling for this daggerin the West is \'kris\', while \'keris\' is more popular in the East.
Suffice to say they’re a distinctiveweapon common in South East Asia, being found mainly throughout Indonesia andMalaysia.
The origin is Java and the kris is a Javaneseasymmetrical dagger with distinctive blade patterning, it is famous for itswavy blade.
This dagger is a fine example: a very rustichand beaten blade with both edges still sharp enough to cut paper.
This kris blade is made of thin bars of ironand or steel which are beaten together.
Wooden hilt and sheath, the sheath beingcovered with a hand beaten metal sleeve, brass, with the original oldunpolished beautiful patina.
The hilt sits in a small metal cup called the‘pendongkok’ which separates the hiltfrom the main part of the blade.
If the hilt is removed, the cup, which is notattached to the blade, is easily slipped off and often it is not replaced or itis changed when the hilt is changed.
I don’t think this hilt has ever beenremoved.
The hilt is hand carved in two spots,possibly a religious motif.
Measures: 49cm x 18cm x 3cm.(19 1/4in x 71/8in x 1in).
Blade 37cm (14 1/2in).
Weight: 352g.
CONDITION:Ingood original used condition and showing wear consistent with age and use.
It’s been used, a lot, the metalsleeve showing the dings and dents of a working dagger.
The boat shaped wooden guard; the‘sampir’ has a tiny chip to one sidewhich has been poorly filled, this can be easily invisibly restored ifrequired.
This is a wonderful tactileinteresting old Javanese weapon.
