An unusual and wonderfully detailed Chinese carved bamboo river/fishing boat, cleverly designed so that it can also be displayed upright and used as a brush pot / brush holder.
Carved from a substantial section of bamboo, the horizontal scene depicts a traditional covered river boat with several figures, including a seated boatman holding a long pole or oar. The cabins feature extensively incised geometric roof decoration, open windows and architectural details.
When stood vertically, the natural hollow bamboo section forms a tall brush pot, making this a particularly interesting dual-purpose decorative piece.
Measures approximately 8½ inches long × 2½ inches wide when displayed as a boat.
No signature or maker\'s marks found.
Believed to be Chinese, probably early-to-mid 20th century, although the exact age and origin cannot be guaranteed.
Condition: Good overall vintage condition with age-related surface wear, dust remaining within some of the deeper carving and natural variations associated with bamboo. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
A very unusual piece of carved bamboo work which displays particularly well in either orientation.
