ULTRA RARE 1986 COLECO INTERNATIONAL TOY FAIR GRAND OPENING ACRYLIC COMMEMORATIVE PIECE
Coleco was one of the defining names of the great electronic toy and video-game boom of the late 1970s and 1980s. From handheld electronic games to ColecoVision and the massive Cabbage Patch Kids phenomenon, Coleco became a powerhouse in American toy history. By the mid-1980s, the company was operating at the center of an incredibly exciting era when toy companies battled for attention, shelf space and the next nationwide sensation.
This remarkable acrylic piece commemorates the Grand Opening of Coleco’s National & Eastern Sales Office at 28 West 23rd Street in New York City during the International Toy Fair on February 10, 1986. This was clearly not a normal retail product—it appears to have been created for the company, employees, executives, guests or industry attendees connected with this specific event. Pieces like this were never mass-market collectibles, which is exactly what makes surviving examples so fascinating today. The piece does show a few light hairline scuffs from storage, and a few of the printed letters have a small amount of ink loss, all visible in the photos. Even with those minor age-related flaws, this remains a fantastic piece of genuine Coleco corporate history tied to a specific place, date and major toy-industry event. For the serious Coleco, ColecoVision, vintage toy or corporate memorabilia collector, this is the kind of obscure historical piece that may be incredibly difficult to ever replace.
