In Ancient Egyptian religion, the sacred ibis bird was highly revered as the living incarnation of Thoth, the god of wisdom, writing, magic, and moon. Statues like this were frequently produced during the Late Period and Ptolemaic Period (roughly 664–30 B.C.). They were placed in temples or catacombs as votive offerings, and larger, hollow versions often functioned as sacred coffins to house mummified ibises.
