Vintage hand-carved wooden headrest from Ethiopia, likely Oromo, mid-20th century.
Traditional headrests like this (called "boraati" in the Oromo language) were used for sleeping on one's side to protect elaborate hairstyles, and were often carried by herders as a portable seat. This example has a curved rectangular cradle with ribbed carving at each end and notched edges, a smooth round column, and a flared conical base carved with concentric rings, a band of zigzag triangles, and finely notched borders. It retains much of its red and ochre pigment, with a warm handling patina from age and use.
Approx. measurements: 7" tall x 7.75" wide (top) x 5" base diameter.
The piece is sold as a decorative and collectible object, with no further provenance known.A striking sculptural piece for a bookshelf, mantel, or African art collection.
