Vintage General Electric X-317 Series multiband vacuum tube radio, dating to approximately 1946–1947. This substantial tabletop radio features a handsome figured wood veneer cabinet, decorative metal grille, illuminated horizontal tuning dial, and classic late Art Deco / early postwar styling.
The impressive multiband dial provides seven tuning ranges, including standard AM broadcast plus multiple shortwave and spread-band ranges. Controls include Off/Tone, Volume, Dial/Tuning, and Band Selector. The rear provides connections for antenna/ground, phonograph input, and auxiliary speaker.
Operational Testing: The radio powers on and the dial illuminates. The dial pointer moves properly when tuning, and the radio produces audio/static. We were able to receive AM radio stations, although reception had static. Testing was performed inside a metal building and without an external antenna, conditions that can significantly affect reception.
The shortwave bands were also tried, but no shortwave stations were received during our limited test without an external antenna. Therefore, shortwave operation has not been fully verified. No additional electronic testing or restoration has been performed.
The radio retains its attractive vintage wood cabinet and presents beautifully, with age-appropriate surface wear including scratches, finish wear, edge/corner wear and other signs of use. Please review all photographs carefully for the cosmetic condition. The rear shows some older tape/alterations around several connection areas, as pictured.
Because this is an approximately 80-year-old unrestored electronic item, its current operation is described only as observed during testing and continued operation cannot be guaranteed. A qualified vintage-radio technician should inspect it before prolonged regular use.
