Vintage Gruen Genève Super-G 422 RSS 17J 12/24 Hour Watch c.1958 AS-IS
Description
Vintage Gruen Genève Super-G – Caliber 422 RSS – 17 Jewels – Circa 1958
Offered here is an unusual earlyGruen Genève Super-G, powered by the 17-jewelGruen caliber 422 RSSmanual-wind movement.
The Super-G is an interesting predecessor to the better-known Gruen Airflight. Rather than being a conventional “jump-hour” watch, it uses a special plate beneath the dial that changes the hour numerals between a standard1–12 display and a 13–24-hour display. The entire set of numerals changes together, giving the watch its distinctive appearance and mechanical interest.
This example has the earlyGruen Genèvedial, applied Gruen emblem, and distinctive hour windows, including gold-bordered diamond-shaped openings at 12, 3, 6 and 9.
PLEASE NOTE CONDITION:The watch is being soldAS IS and in need of service/repair. The movement runs and keeps good time. The hands can be advanced normally, but the 12/24-hour switching mechanism doesnotchange the hour-number display when the hands are advanced through the changeover period. I have not had the watch professionally diagnosed and cannot say what repair will be required.
The watch shows normal age and use. The dial has visible aging, spotting and surface wear, as shown clearly in the photographs. The case also shows normal vintage wear. I have made no attempt to polish the case, refinish the dial, or cosmetically restore the watch. The bracelet is not represented as original to the watch.
The movement is clearly marked:
GRUEN WATCH CO.
SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS
422 RSS
Because of its age and the malfunctioning Super-G mechanism,no representation is made regarding accuracy, power reserve, water resistance, or continued running condition. It should be considered a vintage watch requiring professional service.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description and show the cosmetic condition of the watch.
An interesting and relatively uncommon early Gruen for the collector, particularly because of its unusual mechanical 12/24-hour display system and 422 RSS movement.
Sold AS IS, with the switching mechanism not functioning.
