About This Vintage Hot Wheels:
This is one of those early Hot Wheels designs that proves the fire chief apparently needed considerably more muscle than the average municipal sedan.
Based on the Oldsmobile 442, this vintage Fire Dept Chief version combines classic American muscle-car styling with emergency-service graphics and a roof beacon. Add its early Hot Wheels heritage and Hong Kong base, and it becomes the sort of little red car that can appeal to several collector groups at once.
A great piece for vintage Hot Wheels collectors, Redline enthusiasts, Oldsmobile and Olds 442 fans, fire-service memorabilia collectors, or anyone building an early Mattel diecast collection.
A Little Backstory:
Legend has it that this Olds 442 belonged to the fastest fire chief in the county. He was so determined to arrive before the fire trucks that he installed a high-performance engine and started treating every emergency call like the Indianapolis 500.
One afternoon, while racing to investigate reports of smoke, he discovered the source was merely a neighbor burning hamburgers on the backyard grill.
Unfortunately, the chief was traveling so fast that a startled squirrel launched an acorn straight through his windshield.
The fire was extinguished, the hamburgers were ruined, and the squirrel was issued a citation for reckless nut handling.
The chief never replaced the windshield. He claimed it improved ventilation and made the siren easier to hear.
