Vintage Japanese two-panel folding byobu display screen featuring a raised decorative composition of a kabuto samurai helmet and purple irises.
This type of screen was traditionally used as a decorative backdrop for a Gogatsu Ningyo display during Tango no Sekku, now celebrated as Japanese Children’s Day or Boys’ Day on May 5. Kabuto helmets and irises are traditional symbols associated with strength and protection. The screen may also be displayed independently as Japanese seasonal or interior decor.
