This is an exceptional, authentic piece of primitive American regional folk art hand-carved by the legendary self-taught Ozarks artisan, Junior Cobb (1941–2011).
This tabletop sculpture showcases a charming red songbird perched atop a dramatic piece of weathered wood. True to Cobb’s iconic style, the piece is masterfully executed to incorporate the natural, organic twists, deep grain, and textures of the wood directly into the artistry. The small songbird features a hand-painted polychrome finish highlighting its plumage, facial patterns, and stripes.
The underside of the base features his hand-carved signature \"Junior Cobb\" sliced directly into the raw wood grain.
About the Artist:
Hailing from north-central Arkansas, Junior Cobb was a highly celebrated \"outsider\" artist who famously used nothing more than a simple pocketknife to create his carvings. Despite being unable to read or write, his innate talent earned national acclaim. His distinctive woodcarvings represented Arkansas at the 1970 Smithsonian Folklife Festival and his work has been exhibited by the Smithsonian Institution. His pieces are highly sought after by collectors of rustic Americana, outsider art, and historic Ozark culture.Condition Notes:
Excellent vintage condition with a beautiful, natural patina. The wood structure boasts natural aging, contours, and splitting that are entirely intentional and integrated into the artist\'s original design. Please review all photos carefully to appreciate the tool markings and hand-painted details.
