Rodishvili, a Georgian professional wrestler, was active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He competed during the golden age of classic French wrestling (what we now know as Greco-Roman wrestling). During this era, tournaments were highly popular theatrical and athletic events hosted in circuses, theaters, and athletic clubs across the Russian Empire and Europe. This image comes from a highly popular series of athletic promotional postcards printed between 1900 and 1915. Promoters widely distributed these cards to advertise international wrestling tournaments, featuring stars alongside legends like Ivan Poddubny and Georg Hackenschmidt. Like many early Georgian competitors who transitioned to international Greco-Roman circuits, Rodishvili likely built his foundational strength in Chidaoba, the traditional folk-wrestling style of Georgia. Chidaoba is deeply rooted in Georgian culture and heavily emphasizes upper-body throws, grips, and trips. The number 4071 stamped in the bottom left corner is a catalog or inventory number from the original photographic studio or printing house. The text РОДИШВИЛИ was added directly to the negative block before printing to ensure fans could identify the wrestler when purchasing the memorabilia.
