VINTAGE RENTRAK VIDEO GAME & MOVIE RENTAL INDUSTRY KEYCHAIN — NEW OLD STOCK SEALED!

Nintendo absolutely dominated video gaming throughout the 1980s and 1990s. From the Game & Watch handhelds—including Donkey Kong, Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong Jr.—to the NES, Game Boy, Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64, Nintendo created the games children desperately wanted to play. But not every family could purchase every new cartridge. For millions of young players, the local video store became the gateway to discovering Nintendo games—and RENTRAK was one of the major behind-the-scenes companies helping shape that rental industry.

Rentrak’s history began in Portland, Oregon, in 1977 as the National Video rental chain. In 1988, the company sold its retail-store operations, adopted the Rentrak name and concentrated on its innovative pay-per-transaction system. Instead of forcing rental stores to purchase every title outright at a high price, the system allowed participating retailers to obtain inventory and share a portion of each rental. Rentrak later became a major entertainment-measurement company, tracking movies, television, home video and even video-game sales and rentals.

This wonderfully unusual promotional keychain features Rentrak’s bold blue corporate logo across a large white star-shaped fob, attached to a substantial metal split ring by a flexible clear connector. The star design perfectly captures the flashy promotional merchandise associated with the golden age of video stores, when walls were filled with VHS tapes and shelves of NES, Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis games waited to be rented for the weekend.

Most remarkably, this example remains NEW OLD STOCK in its original clear package! It has apparently never been removed, attached to keys or carried. Promotional items were created to be used, making an unopened survivor far more desirable than a loose example showing years of wear. The original vintage packaging remains part of the collectible and should be preserved.

This piece was discovered within a remarkable collection of vintage Nintendo employee, promotional and video-game-industry memorabilia that had reportedly remained in storage for decades. I could find no other packaged example of this exact Rentrak star keychain during my research. It may have been distributed to company personnel, rental-industry representatives or attendees at an entertainment trade event rather than offered for regular retail sale.
