Excellent pre-owned/collectible condition. Both knives, original-style double leather sheath and Iisakki Järvenpää hang tag are included. Please review photographs carefully for exact condition.
Beautiful and unusual vintage Scandinavian/Sámi-style three-knife set with an intricately hand-engraved antler/bone-type sheath and aged leather fittings.
The large curved sheath features wonderful incised folk-art decoration depicting figures, trees, geometric designs and traditional-looking Scandinavian/Lapland scenes. Small metal pins are incorporated into the sheath construction.
The set includes three individual knives, all fitting into separate compartments within the sheath:
Large knife with engraved antler/bone-type handle
Medium curved-handled knife
Small utility knife with engraved handle
Original decorated sheath with leather upper and metal hanging ring
The complete sheathed set measures approximately 10½–11 inches long.
Condition
Vintage condition with considerable age-related character, wear and patina.
Important: The largest knife appears to have suffered damage to the blade tip at some point. The tip appears to have been broken and subsequently rounded/reshaped, leaving the blade shorter than it would originally have been.
The blades show oxidation, discoloration, scratches and wear consistent with age and use. The leather sheath fitting shows cracking, scuffing and surface wear. The antler/bone-type components have natural discoloration, marks and age-related wear.
No maker’s name, signature or identifying marks have been found despite careful inspection.
The set has not been cleaned, polished or restored.
Please examine all photographs closely as they form an important part of the condition description.
A very attractive and unusual piece of Scandinavian folk-art craftsmanship and a great display piece for a collector of vintage Nordic, Sámi/Lapland or traditional knives.
Please note: Exact age, origin and materials have not been professionally authenticated and are described based upon appearance and construction.
