Susan Stamm Evans (American, b. 1952) — Sisters
Early figurative ceramic sculpture
A wonderful early figurative sculpture by noted American artist Susan Stamm Evans, depicting two women seated closely together in an intimate embrace.
The sculpture retains its original paper label on the underside identifying the artist as “Susan Evans,” the title “SISTERS,” and the original $75.00 price.
The work is beautifully expressive, with elongated hands and bare feet, delicately modeled faces and hair, and heavily textured earthy brown garments. The intertwined arms, overlapping hands and gently touching heads create a particularly tender composition centered on closeness and affection.
This piece is especially interesting in the context of Evans’ early career. In a 1987 Studio Potter profile, Evans discussed her figurative work and specifically referred to her “sister series,” describing figures embracing and her interest in expressing the deep caring between people. The subject, period and original Sisters title make this a compelling example of that early body of work.
Evans is a Wisconsin-based sculptor whose career has included both intimate ceramic figures and, later, larger-scale figurative works in bronze. Her work has been exhibited and collected nationally.
Measures approximately 5” high x 7½–8” wide. Please see photographs with ruler for additional dimensions.
Condition: Very good vintage condition overall. The sculpture is hand-built with intentionally irregular, highly textured clay surfaces and delicate modeled details. There is minor age-related surface wear and soiling consistent with its age. Please examine the numerous close-up photographs carefully for the best assessment of condition and the delicate extremities and textured surfaces.
The important original Susan Evans / SISTERS / $75.00 label remains intact on the underside.
A distinctive and unusually well-documented early figurative work by
Susan Stamm Evans, retaining its original artist and title identification.
As far as I can tell, the sculpture isn't hand signed, only labeled.
