Complete two-volume antique hardcover set of Les Misérables, a novel by Victor Hugo.
A handsome matched pair in deep burgundy ribbed cloth, with gilt spine titles, floral and acorn ornament, and the publisher name Thompson & Thomas at the foot of each spine.
The title pages read Wm. L. Allison Company, New York, and state that the text was translated from the original French by Lascelles Wraxall, with additions by Charles E. Wilbour. Marked complete in two volumes and illustrated. No date is printed. This is the familiar American reprint binding of about 1895–1910.
Volume I opens with Fantine, continues through Cosette, and carries Marius through “The Conjunction of Two Stars,” ending with “End of Volume I.” Volume II resumes Marius, then Saint Denis and Jean Valjean, so the famous arc of the novel is here in full: Valjean, Fantine, Cosette, Javert, Marius, and the barricades.
The cloth is an even maroon, the gilt is still clear, and the two volumes sit together as a set. Nice on a shelf, and still a readable classic.
Condition notes:The paper is uniformly age-toned to a warm tan, as expected for books of this age. In Volume I, pages 131–132 have a small tear.
Covers show light rub and a few small marks. Spine ends and corners are presentable, with no major cloth loss. Bindings appear tight in the photos.
You will receive exactly the two volumes shown. A solid, attractive antique reading set of one of the great novels.
