Vtg. “Cousances” Enamel'd-Iron Fondue Pot Set Complete,’70’s Le Creuset Era, Rare, French
This French firm was founded in 1553. To put that into perspective, Europe had only made first contact with Japan 10 years earlier, and broad swaths of the world were not even known yet to European peoples. Avidly collected, Cousances is widely considered to be on a par in quality with Le Creuset, which acquired the firm in 1957 (hence the often used term, “Le Creuset Era”), but its appeal seems to hinge on its more interesting styling. And with this particular piece, the base is more robust and sturdy than what you'll see in most fondue sets. Don't care to fondue tonight? The oven-safe pot with lid can be used alone.
This was an estate find. I did not acquire any information on it, but there is no evidence whatever of use so I am calling it new. The cooking process involved here would, in my estimation, leave some trace of itself and I am confident in calling it new. This rare set is complete with pot and lid in near perfect condition. There is one tiny chip in the edge of the lid (photo) that may have come from long-term storage and handling or may just be an original imperfection. It’s exaggerated in the close-up photo. The two-part base with warming pot and lid is heavy cast (or maybe wrought) iron. The seven forks are almost certainly original. Item will be shipped in two separate boxes for maximum protection in transit, with separate tracking numbers. If rejected, buyer pays return shipping as per my set policy.
