ANTONI CLAVE
LITHOGRAPH ON WOOD!
MID CENTURY VINTAGE PIECE
GORGEOUS ORIGINAL
LITHOGRAPH ON WOOD!( DIMENSIONS: 35\" x 27\" )Antoni Clave is a mid century contemporary of Pablo Picasso. He was born in Spain but moved to France during the revolutionwhere he befriended Pablo Picasso and was influenced by his style. This work, Fegura A Caballo shows a young boyon a rocking horse and dates to the late forties. Thislithograph on woodwas made whenthe image was at the peak of its popularity about 1951-53 and is a magnificentsetting for an Antoni Clave work and is exceptionally rare in this state.Clave\'s works from this period all revolve around a clash between childhoodand innocence. They celebrate childhood but also manage to evokethoughtful retrospection because his figures are not exuberant orwildly happy, but are thoughtful and almost contemplative. Some felt Clave was melancholic when he painted these worksof puppet like children, clowns and harlequins and that helonged for a simpler time and others argued the worktore away the fantasy of childhood and made it more real.
Picasso\'s influence wasstrong at this point and timeand one seesthis influencein the overall composition.Clave\'sownstyle is still unmistakable in theface and the gentler, thoughtfultone ofthis workwhich appeared at around the same time as his L\'Enfant au Chat.
Clave\'s later works would become ever more abstract andcollector\'s adore this period in which he expressedartistically onuniversal themes which witheveryone could relate, making this vintage lithograph extremely coveted.
