Berlin iron jewelry was first produced in Germany by the Berlin Royal Foundry in 1804. While iron jewelry had traditionally been associated with mourning, it became highly popular between 1813 and 1819 during the War of Liberation against Napoleon. Citizens were asked to donate their gold in exchange for iron jewelry, often inscribed with patriotic mottos such as “Gold gab ich für Eisen” (“I gave gold for iron”) or “Für das Wohl des Vaterlands” (“For the welfare of the fatherland”). Almost overnight, Berlin iron jewelry became a symbol of patriotism, admired for its intricate, lace-like craftsmanship. Though its popularity faded by the mid-19th century, a revival took place during the First World War when similar gold-for-iron exchanges were used to fund the war effort. Today, authentic Berlin iron jewelry is quite rare and highly collectible.This long Edwardian Berlin iron muff chain dates to circa 1916 and is an original First World War piece. The medallion bears the inscription “Eiserne Zeit 1916” (“Iron Times 1916”). The chain has an alternating pattern of elongated links and chain sections and is finished with a watch swivel clasp, perfect for adding a locket or pendant. Condition: Excellent overall condition with light surface wear consistent with age. The chain, slide, and clasp are secure and fully functional. A few tiny rust spots and minor wear—mostly on the medallion—are typical for iron jewelry of this period and not noticeable when worn.
