War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, International Collectors Library, Garden City, New York. This 1960 edition features the abridged translation revised by Princess Alexandra Kropotkin, with line drawings by Don Sibley.
A particularly attractive example in the International Collectors Library “Czar Alexander II Binding,” finished in wine red with elaborate 24K gold-stamped decoration. The binding design was recreated from a rare volume associated with the library of Czar Alexander II.
This copy retains both the original attached red ribbon marker and the original International Collectors Library publisher leaflet explaining the Czar Alexander II binding — desirable completeness features that are often missing from surviving copies.
The interior is exceptionally clean and well preserved. Pages are crisp, straight, and unmarked, with no names, inscriptions, highlighting, underlining, tears, or other internal writing.
Condition: Very Good Plus (VG+) overall, with an interior approaching Near Fine. The gilt decoration remains bright and attractive and the binding is sound. There is localized surface loss/peeling to the binding material along the front joint/spine edge, as clearly shown in the photographs, along with minor age-related shelf wear. The defect appears primarily cosmetic rather than structural. Original red ribbon marker remains attached, and the original Czar Alexander II binding information leaflet is included. Please review all photographs closely for condition.
