Original Victorian The Album of Dundee Views, published by Charles, Reynolds & Co., 26 & 27 Milk Street, London, E.C.
A scarce 19th-century accordion-fold / concertina / leporello view album devoted to Dundee, Scotland, and the surrounding area, illustrated with detailed black-and-white photo-lithographic views.
The album is particularly notable for its view captioned:
“TAY BRIDGE, FROM SOUTH (AFTER ACCIDENT)”
depicting the first Tay Rail Bridge following its catastrophic collapse on December 28, 1879.
Other views include Dundee from the Law, Royal Infirmary, Dundee High Schools, Burns Statue in Albert Square, Tay Bridge from the North, High Street, Balgay Park, Albert Institute, Royal Arch, Reform Street, Baxter Park, Nethergate, Old Steeple, Morgan Hospital, Newport, Broughty Ferry Castle, Broughty Ferry scenes, and additional Dundee-area landmarks.
The inclusion of the Tay Bridge disaster aftermath and the Burns monument, unveiled in 1880, establishes the album as post-1880. The surviving subject matter and Charles Reynolds’ Milk Street imprint are consistent with an approximately mid-to-late 1880s date. Charles Reynolds produced a substantial series of Victorian regional view albums in this distinctive leporello format. Other surviving Reynolds albums from the same Milk Street series are catalogued as photo-lithographic concertina albums.

Condition: Original Victorian album in significantly worn, disbound condition. All illustrated pages/leaves are detached from the spine/binding, although the album appears substantially complete and the views themselves remain generally clean, sharp, and attractive. Covers show heavy rubbing, edge/corner wear, surface loss, and spine wear. Interior pages show age toning, edge wear, and occasional small tears. Please examine all photographs carefully; the album is being sold exactly as shown.
A particularly appealing piece of Dundee local history, Scottish topographical ephemera and Tay Bridge disaster memorabilia.
