This montage gathers Kaiser Wilhelm II and Empress Augusta Victoria at the center of the imperial household, ringed by their six sons, their only daughter, and the women of the family. Crown Princess Cecilie sits at right with the couple\'s first grandchild, Prince Wilhelm, born in 1906, cradled in a long christening gown.
The scene was assembled from separate portraits and set inside a painted hall of paneled walls and chandeliers. The Kaiser stands in a braided greatcoat, the Empress wears an off-the-shoulder gown with long ropes of pearls, and the Crown Prince poses at the far right with a hand on his hip, white cuirassier tunic buttoned to the collar, sash across the chest and saber at his side.
The picture sells permanence. Barely a decade later the empire was gone, and the Kaiser spent his last decades in exile at Doorn in the Netherlands. The infant in white lived to 1940.
