DESCRIPTION
A first edition of Scripturae Linguaeque Phoeniciae, by German lexicographer Wilhem Genesius. Published in 1737 at Leipzig by Fr. Chr. Guil. Vogelii.
All three parts bound in one volume in half calf, with gilt spine details and painted fore edge. Each part with a separate title page but continuous pagination.
Part three of the work includes fourty-six plates of lithographic illustrations. These are numbered 1-44, then 47-48. Collated complete against a digital copy from Biblioteca de la Universidad de Sevilla.

Wilhelm Gesenius (1786-1842) was a renowned lexicolographer, Christian Hebraist, Biblical scholar and theologian.
Parts One and Two provide a comprehensive and elegant study of the Peonician language includes sections on Phoenician palaeography from letters and inscriptions and studies the Phoenicians\' gods and lauguage.
The illustrations in Part Three are predominently inscriptions from stone tablets and coins, including examples from Malta, Carthage and Numibia.
Often found in two separate volumes, or as part three only; this is a rare and fascinating tome.
CONDITION
Bound in half calf and cloth. Externally sound. Light rubbing to joints and extremities. Notable marks to boards. Cloth of back board wrinkled and lightly mottled from water damage. Tide marks to front joint. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. The occasional ink annotation. Scattered spotting throughout. Mild tide marking in place but no loss of text. Despite damage to rear board, text remains clean and work is complete.
