Third revised and improved edition
The title translates asThe Pilgrimage of the Flower Spirits.
A lavish German botanical fantasy by poet and translator Adolf Böttger, illustrated with36 hand-colored engraved plates after J. J. Grandville. The title page reads:
Dritte umgearbeitete und verbesserte Auflage. Mit 36 colorirten Bildern nach Grandville.
Translated:
Third revised and improved edition, with 36 colored illustrations after Grandville.
The plates present flowers as elaborately costumed human figures, often accompanied by insects, birds, frogs, and other participants in Grandville’s imaginative botanical world. Many are signedA. H. Payne sc., identifying the engraver. Among the especially appealing images are and Corn Poppy, and scenes populated by beetles, grasshoppers, dragonflies, and other insects.
The original leather binding is a remarkable example of nineteenth-century decorative bookmaking. Both boards carry a deeply embossed and gilt design centered upon a winged flower fairy surrounded by roses, thistles, seed pods, insects, and dense scrolling vegetation. The spine continues the pictorial scheme with floral ornament, gilt lettering, and a standing figure near the foot. The volume also retains its gilt page edges and patterned moiré endpapers.
The hand coloring remains attractive, with particularly strong blues, reds, greens, and delicate flesh tones. The close detailing of the flowers, costumes, and anthropomorphic insects rewards careful viewing and gives the book appeal well beyond the German-language market.
A striking combination ofGrandville-inspired fantasy illustration, hand-colored botanical imagery, German Romantic literature, and elaborate decorative leather binding.
Condition
Very Good. Binding sound, with substantial rubbing and surface loss at the corners, board edges, and spine ends, as clearly photographed. The embossed decoration remains strong and much of the gilt is still visible. Gilt page edges remain bright. Interior has scattered foxing, toning, and occasional staining. Complete with all 36 hand-colored plates. Small private library label of Erich Lamprecht on the front data-start=\"2072\" data-end=\"2133\">
