The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott
Sir Walter Scott
William P. Nimmo & Co., Edinburgh
1879
1879 illustrated edition
Illustrations by Keeley Halswelle
The cover has moderate wear, including rubbing and some loss at the corners. The interior, however, is fine: the binding is firm, the pages are crisp and unmarked, and the illustrations remain bright and clean.
This substantial volume has gilt-bordered covers, a raised-band spine, and gilt page edges. Alongside more than a dozen full-page illustrations by Keeley Halswelle, it includes an introductory life of Scott by Alexander Leighton.
Scott’s narrative poetry made the history and landscapes of Scotland central to Romantic literature. Halswelle’s illustrations give this Victorian collection a visual character of its own, and the notably fresh interior contrasts with the honest wear to its exterior.
