Splendid example of use of the first Special Delivery stamp,Scott E1, during the first year of special delivery service (which startedOctober 1, 1885). During that firstyear, special delivery service was only available at a couple hundred postoffices, which is why the stamp is inscribed “secures special delivery at anyspecial delivery office”. Mailed fromBoston to Pittsfield, with American machine cancel. Scott $200 for E1 on cover; first year usesare worth a premium. Adding to the interest,the stamps are applied over a penalty imprint, which I have not tried toidentify. Slight reduction at left awayfrom stamps and markings; a bit of light age soiling. An excellent example of the first year use ofE1.
