Up for sale is a beautiful piece of mid-19th-century New York photographic history. This authentic sixth-plate 1850s ambrotype portrait features a sharp image of a young gentleman elegantly framed in a scalloped \"cathedral\" brass mat. The inside face features a remarkably preserved, deeply embossed red velvet pad bearing the prominent signature stamp of historic photographer C.C. Schoonmaker at 282 River Street, Troy, N.Y.
Artist History:
Christopher C. Schoonmaker (1832–1906) was a highly regarded early American daguerreotypist and ambrotypist. Surviving examples of his work from this exact River Street location (occupied between 1855 and 1858) are held in prominent institutional collections, including the George Eastman Museum.
Condition Details:
• Image: Crisp image clarity under the glass plate, showing standard light edge tarnishing/solarization appropriate to its 170+ year age.
• Case: Set in its original dark leatherette/wood book case with an intact hinge spine.
