A striking and unusual 19th-century French Empire-style oil lamp base, richly constructed in gilt bronze, cut glass, and pale yellow stone. This approximately 9.5 inch-tall piece originally formed the lower portion of an elaborate oil lamp. The original burner, upper glass globe, and chimney are no longer present, leaving the beautifully decorative base and cut-glass oil reservoir. The gilt-bronze framework is particularly impressive. Three classical supports are ornamented with Imperial eagles perched above laurel wreaths, along with quiver-and-arrow and foliate motifs. Eagles and laurel wreaths were prominent elements of French Empire decorative vocabulary, drawing upon the imagery of ancient Rome and symbolizing power, victory, and honor. The substantial cut-glass reservoir features beautifully executed radiating and foliate decoration and is mounted above a shaped pale yellow stone plinth. The combination of gilt bronze, cut glass, and stone reflects the luxurious materials used for decorative lighting intended not simply to illuminate an interior, but also to serve as a statement of taste and refinement.A wonderful decorative object even in its present incomplete form. It displays beautifully as a sculptural antique on a mantel, bookshelf, console, or among a collection of Grand Tour and Neoclassical objects.Details:* Origin: France / Continental Europe
