Antique Mid-19th-century English teapot manufactured by T. J. & J. Mayer. Transferware. Idyllic scenery, the pot has a title, “Eden Scenery” on bottom. The scene appears to be English figures in perhaps an India countryside setting. T.J. & J. Mayer was a prominent British pottery manufacturer active from 1843–1855 at Dale Hall, Longport, Burslem, Staffordshire, founded by brothers Thomas, John, and Joseph. Known for high-quality earthenware, and blue-printed designs, they won a medal at the 1851 Great Exhibition and catered heavily to the American market. Pieces from this manufacturer are considered valuable and typical of early-to-mid Victorian English pottery. Dimensions: pot + lid=8”; width at spout + handle=9.5”, Condition: one repair on lid (top knots glued), otherwise very good for its age. Interior glaze is crazed, small amount of crazing on one exterior side; hairline 1” crack on interior (does not go through, appears to be a manufacturing error). Note that tip of spout is in silver, almost certainly sterling. Handsome, rare piece. Please see photos for details.
