Description
This is a particularly lovely example. Rather than the more commonly encountered white porcelain background, the thimble has a wonderful pale blue ground, providing a soft backdrop for the miniature hand-painted scene. The bird is exceptionally detailed for the tiny scale, rendered in charcoal, white and subtle mauve/pink tones, surrounded by softly painted green and yellow foliage.
The upper and lower edges are finished with rich gilt bands, beautifully framing the decoration. The top has the traditional deeply impressed dimples.
The underside bears the puce/purple crowned Royal Worcester England factory mark.
An especially nice addition is the antique thimble box accompanying the piece. The small fitted box is covered with a charming pattern of blue/purple pansies against a red ground and the thimble fits beautifully inside. The interior of the lid retains an old retailer\'s paper label, now partially worn and difficult to decipher. I have left the label unidentified rather than speculate on the retailer.
The thimble measures approximately 1 inch tall, as shown beside the ruler.
I have not found an artist\'s signature and therefore make no attribution to a particular Royal Worcester painter. The quality of the miniature bird painting, however, is particularly fine.
Condition
Beautiful antique condition. No chips, cracks or repairs noted. The hand-painted decoration remains vivid and attractive. There is minor expected age-related wear to the gilt borders.
The antique thimble box shows expected wear from age, including rubbing and wear to the edges and interior. The old paper retailer\'s label inside the lid is worn and partially illegible. These signs of age are consistent with the character of the piece and box.
Please examine all photographs closely as they are an important part of the description.
A wonderful Royal Worcester miniature — especially appealing for its unusual pale blue ground, finely hand-painted bird decoration, gilt borders and beautiful antique pansy thimble box.
