Description: This little early 19th c. all-wood bucket / pail is beautifully made, even if a lengthy lifetime of use has made it a bit rustic. Possibly a berry pail, it\'s about 6 7/8\" to the top of the ear with the handle down,and 7 1/4\" diam.Two single-fingered bands hold the pail together at the top and bottom, held by both early square nails, and some old round-headed nails. Two of the stays extend to \"ears\" to hold the handle. The handle is well carved, becoming thinner and wider at the ends where it attaches to the pail. Pegs that hold in the handle; one appears to be replaced. The staves are butt-jointed on the bottom.The pail is intriguingly marked in pencil on the bottom, \"EX YY\", which might reference the maker, or its use, or the place where it was kept.
I\'ve seen one or two early Shaker examples and Townsend examples of all-wood buckets like this in references, although most all-wood buckets are NOT Shaker, and likely others also made this form.This unsual little bucket would make an outstanding addition to your antique country / primitives collection.
Condition:Fairly Good antique condition, with wear from age and use. One of the pegs for the handle looks like an old replacement, and both pins holding the pegs in place appear replaced. One of the handle ends has a hairline split. One extended ear has an edge that looks like a mouse or other creature may have munched on it.Both bands have small early splits on the fingers, and there are a couple OLD added nails here & there(See photos.)
Size: Approx. 9 1/2\" H to raised handle, 6 3/4\" H to \"ears\", and 5 1/4\" H to rim; 7 3/8\" diam. at the bottom.
