Matched set of four antique early-19th-century American portrait engravings featuring prominent American political and military figures:George Washington — “Geo. Washington Esq., Late President of the U.S. of America”
James Monroe — “James Monroe, President of the United States”
General Zebulon Pike — “General Pike, Late of the United States Army”
Jacob Jones — “Jacob Jones Esq., of the United States Navy”The portraits are finely executed stipple engravings in matching circular formats and appear to date to approximately the War of 1812 / James Monroe era, circa 1817–1820. Research indicates that Monroe, Pike and Jones correspond to portraits published in Paris by Charles Bance (Ch. Bance) as part of a series depicting prominent Americans of the period. The Washington portrait appears to be associated with the same group based on its matching format, mounting and provenance.All four have been mounted on matching pale blue backgrounds and presented in matching gilt frames.Each frame retains an old label from The Old Print Shop, New York, a long-established dealer specializing in antique prints and Americana. Matching handwritten inventory numbers appear on the backs, further suggesting that these four were handled and framed as a set.Condition: Antique pre-owned condition with expected age-related toning, spotting, discoloration and wear to the mounts and frames. Prints remain framed behind glass. Frames show age and finish wear. The prints have not been removed from the frames for inspection. Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition.A striking matched group of early American portrait engravings with subjects relating to the Revolutionary and War of 1812 eras, ideal for an Americana, presidential, naval or early U.S. history collection.Prints are in excellent condition for being over 200 years old - any discoloration is due to the glare from the glass covering. There is minor wrinkling on the General Pike print. Last 4 photos of listing show prints with the glare from the glass frame digitally removed with Photoshop - prints have not been removed from frames - this view is purely to get a better view of the image.
