Beautiful antique Saxony-style double-drive spinning wheel, believed to date from approximately 1820–1850. This impressive early spinning wheel measures approximately 36\" high × 36\" long × 14\" deep and features a 24-inch, 12-spoke drive wheel.
Traditional construction includes a flyer-and-bobbin assembly, double-drive system, left-hand threaded whorl, wooden screw tensioning mechanism, single foot treadle, hand-turned legs, spokes and uprights, and a sectional wooden drive wheel joined with traditional wooden pegs/dowels. The drive-wheel rim also features attractive decorative tooling.
The wheel displays a wonderful dark aged patina and wear consistent with generations of use. Its construction and proportions are consistent with documented 19th-century Saxony-type flax spinning wheels. It presents beautifully as an example of early textile craftsmanship.
Maker and exact origin are unknown. The circa 1820–1850 date is an informed attribution based on construction and comparison with period examples, not a documented manufacture date.
