A beautiful antique French Palais Royal mother-of-pearl thimble, dating to approximately c.1820, complete with its original fitted case.
The thimble is finely made from carved mother-of-pearl with a dimpled working surface, gilt-metal bands and an applied oval plaque decorated with a blue enamel pansy / pensée flower, a motif strongly associated with Palais Royal sewing accessories of this period.
The smooth lower band is also mother-of-pearl and the thimble retains a lovely soft iridescent finish.
It comes in its original shaped fitted case with silk-lined interior. The red exterior shows considerable age-related wear and losses to the surface, but the case remains a very attractive and important part of the piece.
Condition:
Good antique condition for its considerable age. There is a fine hairline crack/line visible within the mother-of-pearl, shown clearly in the photographs. It appears stable with no obvious movement or separation.
There are normal age-related surface marks and wear, some wear/loss to the enamel decoration, and significant wear to the exterior of the original case.
Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
A particularly attractive and collectable example of an early 19th-century Palais Royal sewing thimble, especially desirable with its original fitted case.
