Butia odorata, or the Jelly Palm or Pindo Palm, is one of the most cold-hardy pinnate (feather) palms that you can grow. It\'s been a staple landscape palm in North Florida and the lower Southeast USA for decades and decades. While it can also be grown in Central and South Florida, it tends to look its best a little further north. Able to take temperatures into the low teen Fahrenheit before receiving cold damage, this is one of the main reasons for its popularity. Another reason is its tropical appearance. It\'s a quite variable species, with leaf color all the way from green to very silvery. Relaxed leaves to stiff, upright leaves. Different colored fruit, from yellow, white, orange, red or even purple. The fruit is edible and can be quite tasty, and as the common name implies, can be used to make a delicious jelly. It\'s a very low-maintenance palm as well, but is more attractive if the trunk is kept neatly trimmed up. I have seeds from what I am calling the Florida State Champion. The fact is, there is no category for Butia odorata in the list of Florida State Champion trees...but if there was, this one would be at the very TOP! I have traveled all over North and Central Florida, and have seen some beautiful Butia palms, but none of them have been anywhere near as tall or as beautiful as this one. It is over 100 years old, being planted when the house was new over 100 years ago. I got permission to collect seeds this past year, and am happy to offer them.
