Bird-Form Handles • Animal-Mask Decoration • Hurricane Katrina HistorySubstantial Chinese-style archaistic gui-form vessel made from a heavy, nonmagnetic metal, most likely bronze, brass or another copper alloy.The vessel has a traditional flared rim, rounded body, raised pedestal foot and two elaborate bird- or dragon-form handles. Its exterior is decorated with raised taotie-style animal masks, circular bosses, scrollwork and geometric bands inspired by ancient Chinese ritual bronzes.HURRICANE KATRINA HISTORY:My husband and I found this vessel in December 2005 while performing two weeks of Hurricane Katrina relief work in and around Pascagoula, Mississippi. It was partially buried in saltwater sand among storm debris along the beachfront, approximately four months after Hurricane Katrina struck.We have owned and preserved it ever since.CONDITION:The vessel shows extensive surface oxidation, verdigris, mineral encrustation, discoloration, pitting and wear from prolonged exposure to saltwater, sand and storm conditions. The distressed surface and deposits have been left intact.A magnet was tested on the body, base and handles and did not adhere anywhere, indicating that the vessel is composed of a nonferrous metal. No destructive metal testing has been performed.The vessel has not been polished, chemically cleaned or professionally restored. Please examine all photographs carefully, including the interior, underside, handles and close-up condition images.Age, exact alloy, maker and country of manufacture have not been professionally authenticated.
