Abdul Aziz was the Ottoman sultan who came to power in 1861 following the death of his brother Abdulmecid I. His reign coincided with a period of intense financial pressure on the Ottoman Empire, which had borrowed heavily from European creditors during the Crimean War era and was struggling to service its debts. Egypt at this time was a semi-autonomous province under the Khedivate, governed by Said Pasha and then from 1863 onward by Ismail Pasha, who aggressively pursued modernization and infrastructure projects, most famously the Suez Canal, which would open in 1869.
The early 1860s were a pivotal moment for Egypt economically. The American Civil War had disrupted global cotton supplies, and Egyptian cotton found enormous demand in European markets, briefly flooding the country with revenue. This cotton boom encouraged Ismail to spend and borrow at a scale that would eventually lead to financial ruin and, ultimately, British occupation in 1882. The coins struck during this period reflect that moment of apparent prosperity and ambition, when Egypt was modernizing its institutions and its currency alongside its infrastructure.
The decision to strike Egyptian coinage at the Paris mint rather than locally was itself a marker of this modernizing drive. European minting technology produced more consistent and finely struck coins than could easily be achieved at the Misr mint at the time, and contracting work to Paris signaled an orientation toward Western standards that characterized Ismail\'s broader program of reform. The 2-1/2 qirsh denomination sat within a restructured Ottoman-aligned monetary system and served everyday commerce in a province whose economy was rapidly integrating with European trade networks.Please look closely at the pictures and grade the coin for yourself as this is the actual coin you will receive.
