Fine Georgian Sterling Silver Teapot by Joseph Scammell, London, 1790
A fine and elegant George III sterling silver teapot, hallmarked for London, 1790, and crafted by the noted London silversmith Joseph Scammell. This handsome late eighteenth-century example displays the refined neoclassical taste of the Georgian era, displaying the restrained neoclassical elegance associated with the Adamesque taste of the late eighteenth century.
The teapot has an attractive oval, slightly tapering body with a straight, tapered spout and the original ebony handle of graceful form. The domed hinged lid fits well and retains its original ebony finial. A finely executed flush hinge, a hallmark of quality Georgian silversmithing, further reflects the excellent craftsmanship of the piece.
The body and lid are adorned with delicate hand-engraved bright-cut floral and foliate decoration, creating an elegant border around the upper and lower edges. The engraving remains crisp and well preserved, enhancing the refined appearance without overwhelming the clean Georgian design.
Each side of the body features a shaped shield-form cartouche. One cartouche has been left blank, while the other bears an engraved armorial device depicting what appears to be an armored boot or leg armor, likely part of the original owner\'s family crest. These original engraved details contribute to the teapot\'s historical appeal.
The original ebony handle remains secure and comfortable in the hand, making the teapot suitable for display or practical use.
