A studio archive lot of 13 original composition studiesby American artist Herbert L. Leopold (1920–2009), dating from the 1970sthrough the 1990s. Executed in ink, marker, pastel, and related drawing mediaon assorted papers, the group explores architectural settings, historical andnarrative scenes, figures, interiors, and preliminary arrangements for largercompositions. Several sheets contain multiple studies, showing Leopold workingthrough alternative placements of figures, architecture, and major compositionalelements.
Herbert L. Leopold (1920–2009) was an American painter,muralist, sculptor, illustrator, cartoonist, and educator. He studied at theAmerican Artists School and Pratt Institute and maintained studios in York,Pennsylvania, and Forest Hills, New York. His long career encompassed painting,drawing, illustration, mural work, teaching, and later medallic sculpture.These preparatory sheets offer an especially direct view of his working processand development of narrative compositions.
Condition varies throughout the group. This is an as-isstudio lot. The sheets show varying degrees of toning, folds, handling creases,edge wear, tears, losses, staining, surface dirt, tape remnants, and otherage-related wear. Several toned and brown-paper sheets are fragile, withbrittle or irregular edges and areas of paper loss. Some sheets were removedfrom sketchbooks and retain perforated or torn binding edges.
