Executed in ink, ink wash, and graphite on assortedpapers, including translucent and toned sheets. The group includes portrait andcharacter studies, historical and costumed figures, standing and recliningfigures, and rapid compositional studies.
Herbert L. Leopold (1920–2009) was an American painter,muralist, sculptor, illustrator, cartoonist, and educator. He studied at theAmerican Artists School and Pratt Institute and maintained studios in York,Pennsylvania, and Forest Hills, New York. His long career encompassed painting,drawing, illustration, mural work, teaching, and later medallic sculpture, withfigure drawing remaining an important part of his studio practice.
Condition varies throughout the group. This is an as-isstudio lot. The sheets show varying degrees of toning, folds, handling creases,edge wear, tears, losses, staining, surface dirt, and other age-related wear.Several drawings on toned or brown papers are particularly fragile, withbrittle edges, tears, and areas of paper loss, and should be handled carefully.Some translucent sheets show wrinkles, fold lines, and age discoloration.Please refer to the pictures for condition.
