MANUEL OLIVAS MATA ORTIZ / CASAS GRANDES POLYCHROME POTTERY BOWL
Offered here is a striking signed polychrome pottery bowl attributed to Manuel Olivas (1940–2007), associated with Mata Ortiz/Casas Grandes pottery of Chihuahua, Mexico.
This is a large, shallow open bowl/platter form featuring an extensively hand-painted interior. Unlike many pottery vessels where the primary decoration appears on the exterior, the visual focus of this piece is the dramatic geometric composition covering nearly the entire inside of the bowl.
The buff/tan pottery body is decorated in traditional black and reddish-brown polychrome pigments. The interior features a bold radial/geometric composition incorporating pointed and stepped forms, sweeping interlocking elements, black geometric fields, reddish-brown triangular sections, circular reserves, and repeated cross/X-like symbols. Multiple dark concentric bands encircle the interior immediately below the rim.
The underside is comparatively undecorated and bears a large incised handwritten signature reading "Manuel Olivas," together with an additional incised symbol beneath the signature.
The overall appearance is highly decorative and displays beautifully from above, making this an especially interesting example for a Mata Ortiz, Mexican pottery, Southwestern art, or studio pottery collection.

IMPORTANT CONDITION INFORMATION
This is a pre-owned/vintage handmade pottery vessel and should not be expected to be in new condition.
The piece displays surface wear, pigment/paint wear, scratches, scuffs, abrasions, discoloration, small marks, surface irregularities and other characteristics associated with age, handling and handmade pottery.
IMPORTANT: THERE IS A VISIBLE HAIRLINE/FIRING CRACK EXTENDING DOWNWARD FROM THE UPPER RIM INTO THE INTERIOR WALL OF THE BOWL.
A close-up photograph of this area has been included specifically to document the crack. It appears stable from our visual examination, but NO GUARANTEE IS MADE CONCERNING ITS PRESENT OR FUTURE STABILITY.
There is also a small shallow chip/flake/loss along the upper rim, which is clearly shown in the close-up photographs.
The painted interior exhibits expected age-related surface and pigment wear, small abrasions and other imperfections. The underside also exhibits scratches, marks and general surface wear consistent with previous handling.
PLEASE CAREFULLY EXAMINE ALL PHOTOGRAPHS, including the close-up photographs of the rim, hairline/firing crack, rim loss, painted interior, underside and signature. The photographs are considered an important part of the description and condition report.
Other than the specifically disclosed hairline/firing crack and rim chip/flake, no major breaks or repairs are readily apparent from our visual examination and photographs. However, we are not professional pottery conservators, and we cannot guarantee the absence of additional extremely fine hairlines, old restoration, repairs, touch-up, or other imperfections that may not be readily visible.
