MEXICO – LOT OF 7 PRE-PHILATELIC / STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTERS, 1840s–1850s

Attractive and varied group of seven original Mexican stampless folded letters / covers from the classic pre-philatelic period.

The lot includes postal markings and correspondence associated with several Mexican towns and routes, Juan del with various manuscript and handstamped postal rates including 2, 3 and 4 reales, FRANCO markings and dated town handstamps.

Several letters retain their complete original handwritten contents.

Highlights include:

• San Juan del Río, 1 August 1854, complete letter addressed to Canonigo Don Juan Bautista Ormaechea in Mexico City. The text includes personal and religious correspondence concerning a death in the family and a request for prayers and assistance.
• Durango, with clear boxed red departure marking and complete manuscript contents.
• Several additional covers bearing scarce or attractive regional handstamps and rate markings.
• One complete letter with detailed commercial / administrative content concerning mining, sales (“remates”), expenses and mine operations, adding significant social and economic historical interest.

The group provides a good cross-section of Mexican postal history before the introduction of adhesive postage stamps in 1856.

Condition

Original 19th-century correspondence showing normal folds, toning, small tears, staining, seal remnants and handling wear. Some pieces are very well preserved for their age; others show more obvious postal and archival wear.
