Machinao Shohin Japanese Bonsai Pot Kairagi Brain Gold Teeth 3 x 2.5 x 1.25\" For Sale

Imaoka Machinao, famed Japanese bonsai potter, began making shohin and mame bonsai pots at his namesake kiln in Tokyo in 1964. Before his death in the 1990s he produce a number of kairagi-yu glazed Bonsai pots. This is one of those pots.
Since his death in the 1990\'s, the stockpile of available pots for sale with this unique type of glaze have dwindled. This particular pot was featured on the website Japanese Bonsai Pots blog quite a few years ago. It is one of his best-- a rare find-- quite sought-after, quite collectible.
This is a shohin bonsai pot packed with many unique features. It measures 3 in x 2.5 in X 1.25 in. It is rectangular in shape with indented corners and an unusual rounded rim when viewed from the top. It has the Machinao chop mark underneath which is slightly welled up from firing shrinkage.
Kairagi is the description of the sharkskin cover used to cover the scabbard and sword. That\'s the pebble like texture, but there\'s also another texture referred to as a brain glaze. Additionally, there are puddle-like areas resembling rows of teeth. Moreover it is riddled with vivid 20K dental gold crowns and other gold embellishments. The overall glaze is slightly gray and the patina is somewhat dingy gray and it feels slightly vitreous like a diamond that needs to be cleaned. This is the epitomy of what the word tactile means.
This is a very hands-on and eye-catching piece of artistry all captured in a small egg-sized, rare masterpiece by Japanese bonsai potter Imaoka Machinao.
