FOR SALE IS A PMG GRADED BANK NOTE FROM 1881,1 REAL DE INCA ON 1 SOL. PICK# 11.
The 1881 1 Real de Inca on 1 Sol (Pick #11) is a highly significant, rare provisional banknote issued by Peru during a period of severe economic devastation caused by the War of the Pacific (1879–1884) against Chile.Historical Context & The "Inca" Currency
  • Emergency Currency System: In January 1881, the Chilean army occupied Lima. With the central government disrupted and the economy collapsing, Peru briefly introduced a new currency system known as the Inca between 1881 and 1882 to replace the hyper-inflated, depreciated Sol.
  • The Denomination Conversion: Under this short-lived monetary emergency act, 1 Inca was equal to 10 Soles, and 1 Inca was subdivided into 10 Reales de Inca. Therefore, 1 Real de Inca was exactly equal to 1 Sol.
The Significance of Pick #11
  • Provisional Surcharged Overprint: Rather than printing entirely new paper money from scratch, the Peruvian government took unissued, leftover 1 Sol banknotes (originally printed around 1873-1877 by the American Bank Note Company) and overprinted/surcharged them with the new provisional text: "1 Real de Inca".
  • Short-Lived Use: The Inca currency system lasted for less than two years. The banknotes were officially withdrawn in 1882 as the war drew toward its conclusion, making all remnants of this monetary experiment incredibly scarce.
  • The "Pick" Catalog Number: In world paper money collecting, "Pick #11" refers to its exact entry in the standardized Standard Catalog of World Paper Money (originally compiled by Albert Pick).
  • Front (Obverse) ImageryThe front of the banknote features prominent imagery split between portraits and detailed background text: [1]
    • The Left Portrait Vignette: Features a portrait of José Gálvez Egúsquiza, a revered Peruvian national hero and politician who died defending the country at the Battle of Callao in 1866. He is flanked conceptually by engravings of a sailing ship and a steam train, which represented modern industrial progress and trade for Peru during the 1870s.
    • The Train on the ReverseWhile the front focuses on the portrait of José Gálvez and the official overprints, the reverse of the base 1 Sol banknote (printed by the American Bank Note Company) centers around a beautifully detailed, large vignette of a 19th-century steam locomotive. [1]
      • Symbolism of the Train: During the 1870s, under the presidency of José Balta, Peru underwent a massive, ambitious push to build railroads across the rugged Andes Mountains (led by the famous American engineer Henry Meiggs). This train vignette was proudly placed on the paper currency to celebrate industrial modernization, progress, and the expansion of national infrastructure.
      • Surrounding Design: The steam train engine is surrounded by heavy, circular geometric border frames (guilloche work) with the large numeral "1" on either side to mark the denomination.
