This is a very rare Artist Proof (A/P) by Frank Whipple (1923-2016) of California who was known for his whimsical nun scenes since WWII. During the war, Whipple was stationed as an Army journalist in Italy and was drawn to the French nuns, the Daughters of Charity, who wore fanciful headpieces known as “wimples”. He used these nuns in many of his art pieces, known collectively as “Whipple’s Wimples.”
This piece is Frank Whipple’s “Art Appreciation”, a signed Artist Proof (A/P) that combines elegance, creativity, and timeless appeal. This is an original signed by the artist. The 6 nuns are admiring “Art” hidden behind the yellow balloon.
