The work reproduces paintings and drawings created under the wartime \"Recording Britain\" project, which documented the British landscape and built environment.In 1940, during World War II, The Pilgrim Trust funded a nationwide effort to document Britain\'s landscapes, architecture, villages, industries, and historic sites that were threatened by war, modernization, or loss. Nearly 100 artists were commissioned to travel throughout England and Wales creating watercolors, drawings, and paintings. The resulting works were later given to the Victoria and Albert Museum.Contents
The complete project recorded 1,549 artworks by 97 artists. The books reproduce selections from these works in both monochrome and color plates.
