He was one of the youngest of the New York School, which also included Philip Guston, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko.Like many of his colleagues of the Abstract Expressionist generation, Motherwell remained devoted to recognizable imagery, to the expressive potential of calligraphic marks and to subject matter of a literary and political nature. Motherwell earned his bachelors from Stanford and a PhD from Harvard. He was previously married to fellow artist Helen Frankenthaler until 1971.
